• Yate 1st Mens V Bristol & West 2nd

    Yate 1st Team Mens v Bristol & West 2nd’s, Saturday 16th September 2017. Yate 5 – Bristol & West 2

Yate Men’s Hockey Club 1st team kicked off their 2017/18 season with a friendly match against neighbours, and rivals, Bristol & West 2nd team. Both teams were keen to start their season well and it was Yate who settled quickest and went ahead early with a penalty corner strike by Darren Ashley. Marcus Smith’s tireless running up front resulted in a superb goal after the ball was moved quickly out of defence by Dominic Chambers through the midfield to Smith who finished in style. Bristol & West then hit back with a goal of their own after a strong right wing attack wrong footed the Yate defence and goalie Michael Edwards was left with little chance. However, Yate immediately converted their fourth penalty corner with a deflection from the ever young Gareth Slater and Marcus Smith added a second goal and the sides turned around with Yate leading 4 to 1.

The second half saw Bristol & West match Yate more closely and with Yate experimenting with a “half court press” it invited Bristol & West to score next after a fast left wing attack. With Sam Patton back running the midfield, Yate closed the stronger team and the final goal came from a flow of passes amongst the three Hatfields, Father John and sons Miles and Oscar, with Miles finishing with a reverse stick shot. The question of who was the best or worst of the father and son trio was not properly settled until Oscar missed an open goal created by his brother and father. Yate ran out 5 to 2 winners and started their season with a fine win.

If someone said to you that you could raise money EVERY time you shop with no cost to you and for only one click of a button / launch of an app you would think they were crazy right?!

Well here is the good news! With the simple click of a button you can now get donations for the club at no extra cost for practically everything you could imagine you would want to buy with practically every retailer you could wish to shop with (I’m yet to find an organisation yet anyway!).

All donations will contribute to our larger projects of acquiring new dug outs, developing the pitch surround and of course the new pitch relay.

  • Rules of Hockey

The only rule change from the start of last season is that the Experimental Rule for ‘Own Goals’ has been withdrawn.

NONE of the ‘advanced’ rules seen at the Olympics e.g. 2 minute off for a Green card, the sending of a short corner defender to the half way line for early breaking – are applicable at our level.

All players are expected to have done the England Hockey Rules Education Online training course  – prior to the start of the League.
